Zibo became popular during the pandemic. This time, I came back to Weihai to discuss PhD application matters with my supervisor. Coincidentally, my girlfriend was also spending her summer vacation in Weihai. On the way back to Shanghai, we passed through Zibo—so we made a detour to check out the famous Badaju Market and try Zibo-style barbecue. I didn’t expect that even in 2023, Badaju was still packed. We strolled around a bit and quickly left—there wasn’t even space to stand.

As someone from the Northeast, I usually don’t expect much from barbecue outside my hometown. But I have to say—Zibo barbecue was genuinely good. We randomly picked a roadside stall, sat on the curb eating and drinking, and it felt great. Halfway through, an elderly man walked over with a little dog and offered it some barbecue—only for the poor pup to immediately throw it all up.
