Weekend trip: I left Beijing for Tianjin to meet up with my girlfriend, then we took off from Tianjin to explore the surrounding area. Fall in North China is gorgeous — mostly clear blue skies, and the weather feels a lot nicer than back in the Yangtze River Delta.

This is a must-visit spot in Cangzhou — time to “support Teacher Guo’s business” a little. All the drinks are named after his famous catchphrases, like “Cu Mei Milk” and “Wu Zhong Sheng You,” which are full of wordplay and memes.

We wandered into a random local market, picked up some mandarins and “majiang eggs” (a local egg snack). Places like this, so down-to-earth and everyday, always make me feel strangely at peace.
The guy driving the Hongqi was absolutely crazy — I just couldn’t keep a straight face.
